500 Word Paper: What I've Learned This Year

My first semester of News Media Practicum was nothing that I expected. I entered the class expecting to be sitting in a classroom, listening to lecture on boring subjects. Once the class started and we got into the groove of things I quickly realized that I was completely wrong. It has been an extremely educational experience, while still managing to be fun! The in class discussions alone were extremely enlightening and shed a lot of light on not only the broadcast industry, but also how different people think. Whether the discussions were simple conversations or heated debates (which we had our share of), it showed that everybody truly thinks differently and also showed how people respond to different forms of interaction. For example, whenever we found ourselves in these heated debates, it was interesting to see that when someone raised their voice, the other person would raise their voice louder. Or if someone tried to speak calmly and someone raised their voice at them, they would keep calm and eventually just stop arguing.  Knowing these sorts of things are crucial for a Communications major because we will constantly be interacting with people and we have to understand how people respond to different things.
Outside of the classroom, Practicum acts as a sort of on the job training, only with students instead of a real job. It provides perfect practice for learning all different areas of the Communications department. I participated in the Southern News Network and the Interlachen. I learned a lot from both of them. While working on Southern News this semester, I gained a lot of experience in how to write a brief story that covers all of the necessary points, while still staying short enough for an announcement. I also learned a little bit about the equipment while working. I learned how to use the switch board. I got the opportunity to work on one of the shows doing this and basically control who was on camera at what point. It was pretty simple overall but it was definitely something new as well. I also learned a small amount about the teleprompter. I learned this, not from operating it, but watching Nya operate it at the most recent shoot and watching problems get solved in the process.
I think that the biggest learning experience that I’ve had this semester was with Interlachen. I found that this group of people was extremely welcoming and willing to embrace the new kids and help them learn. Right from the beginning I took up taking photos for them so I learned how to operate the cameras. I had used similar cameras before so I knew a fair amount already, but it was definitely great practice and background knowledge. I also learned how to set up for portraits during the first day of portraits. Shannah and I were responsible for setting up since we were the people working the first portion of allotted time, so I observed and helped where I could. The biggest learning experience that I had here was learning how to edit photos for the yearbook in Lightroom. I had never edited any pictures before and it was completely new to me. However, Shannah has been extremely helpful and a great teacher and I’ve even edited photos for many events on my own now! Overall I can honestly say that semester one of Practicum has been a great experience and has taught me a lot about many different parts of communications!

11/28/11

On Monday, 11/28/11, I went to the Interlachen lab around 3:00 pm to begin editing pictures that had been taken the previous week. I edited for about an hour until around 4:00 and then we held out Interlachen meeting. We discussed the new layout idea of having a "retro" theme, as well as signing up for events being held that week. Bob also showed us a video of something he might like us to mimic for our video yearbook. Following the meeting I continued to edit photos. By the time that I left, I had edited photos of Southern's Got Talent, Turkey Trot, and a fraternity event (I don't remember which fraternity). I left the lab around 6:00.

11/22/11

I helped Anna work on a project for one of her Broadcast classes. The project was a package about your residence keys and the safety office on campus wanting to charge you if you lose them in the future. I helped out with the editing in the studio after she shot it.

11/14/11

Today I wrote three stories for the Southern News Network and emailed them to Anna. I wrote a story advertising Tartuffe for the FSC Theatre Department, a story about Convo being the Wednesday after next week, and a story about a Holiday Food Drive hosted by The Life & Cultural Center on campus. Each story is supposed to count as one hour if I remember correctly from the last time that we did stories.

9/21/11

Today we had a Southern News Network meeting. We were mostly there to pick topics to write our stories on this week, and I chose to write a blurb about the Flu Shots coming on campus next weekend. We got an hour for this meeting.

Later in the day, I went to the Lambda Chi cookout in front of Hollis to take pictures for Interlauchen. I showed up there at 5:00 and ended up leaving at about 6:30.

I stayed there helping recruit, take names, etc. until about 2:00 when I left for class. (3 hours, 20 minutes) Following my class, I came back around 3:20 and stayed there until about 6:20 helping out. (3 hours)

Interlauchen Meeting (9/12)

Today I attended my first Interlauchen Meeting. We discussed the events coming up this week and I signed up to take photos at the first Convo event this Wednesday. Shanna showed us how to operate the cameras, and also gave us a gist of what Interlauchen was and how it worked. They talked about portraits coming up next Monday and I may be signing up to help out with a time slot on there and they also talked to me about potentially doing some video work for them since I am a Broadcast major.

Today I went out to the JR Lobby to help Anna get footage for her Media Projects assignment. We were covering the AOPI Tie Dye event. We got there when it started at 4 and filmed plenty of people at the event, getting some interviews as well as B-Roll stuff. She decided that she had enough footage after about an hour of filming and we left at 5:00.

New Hours (8/31, 9/5, & 9/7)

On Wednesday August 31, I attended another Southern News Network meeting. Basically what went on in this meeting was that we were deciding stories for the show this week. We were told that we were to have our stories in by Tuesday, September 6th and I ended up choosing to write a blurb about the upcoming 9/11 concert hosted by the music department. I was told that we would receive one hour for that meeting.

On September 5th, I wrote my blurb for the show and emailed it to Anna. As mentioned before, it was a short ad for the upcoming 9/11 concert, taking place on Sunday (September 11th). I was also told that we would receive an hour for writing these and getting them in on time.

Today, September 7th, I attended the Southern News Network meeting and the basis of the meeting today was that we got a sample script made up of the stories that we submitted this week, and then looked at the equipment and got walked through the basis of how a show would be shot. We didn't actually shoot today, but we did run as if we were shooting. We didn't get stories assigned because we have Convo next week, but we decided we will be meeting a different day next week. I received an hour for attending this meeting as well.

08/29/11 *First Southern News Meeting*

So today was the first meeting of the Southern News Network and I was in attendance there. I showed up at 11:00, when it was scheduled, after wandering around trying to find it for awhile. Haha. When I got there, there were a lot of upperclassmen, and only one other Freshman there with me. We just talked about basic info regarding the newscast. We established that meetings would now be on Wednesdays @ 10:40 AM in the newsroom, and that was when stories would be assigned. Then stories would be due by noon the following Tuesday. We were told that the stories would just be short blurbs to add into the show, nothing too major to start off with, and that Anna would help us and kind of show us how to write those at the next meeting. Anna told us a little bit about how the Broadcasting world is from her experience and talked about her fishing show that she is working on now, and then gave us an overview of what we could potentially do in the future on Southern News. She talked about potentially anchoring as seniors, running the camera eventually, maybe learning the soundboard, etc. About halfway through the meeting, Dr. Bradford popped in to oversee the meeting.

I'm not positive what time I left, but Anna said that we would probably receive around a half hour of credit for this, and 11:30 sounds about right for the time that we were done. I can't wait for the next meeting!
