3-27-2013 (1.5 HOURS)

I came into the Interlachen office today at 10:15 a.m. and began looking over edits for the book. We thought that we were finally finished with the book last week, but we received final edits from Bob yesterday. Most of the edits had already been changed when I got to it, but my job today was to look over everything and double check them to make sure that they were made, and made correctly.

I worked on this until 11:45 a.m. and made it through the entire book. I think that we are finally finished now! Hopefully no more edits come back at us!

3-18-2013 (5 hours)

On Monday we met for our weekly Interlachen meeting and it was another work meeting. I got there at 5 and sat down to edit some copy and layout things and we were there until about 9:00. It was a lot of reviewing the book and tweaking errors, so there's not much else to say about it.

I also re-wrote copy about Christmas on campus for the book that day, which counts as one hour.

Hours for 3/1-3/6 (8 HOURS)

March 1, 2013
Today I wrote up questions for an interview with Luke Jenner, a junior captain of our FSC soccer team. The interview was being done for the Interlachen in an effort to feature some accomplished athletes from different teams on campus in the book this year. I ended up writing about 20 questions (probably more than we needed for his page) ranging in everything from his early beginnings in soccer, to his current accomplishments, and pre-game rituals. The interview was scheduled for Monday when we came back from Spring Break. The writing of the questions took about an hour.

I sat down today to finally write the stories that I promised Austen for the news show this week. This was my first time writing anything for the show since last year (when I was highly inexperienced!), so I was a little nervous. It was time to put those Broadcast Writing skills to the test! I wrote a brief reader for the Pi Run, sponsored by the math club. I also wrote an intro and a tag for my photo essay which was featured on the show this week. That was really cool because it was my first real broadcast work at FSC, and honestly since my Freshman year of high school, and it felt good to get good feedback on it. Austen seemed pleased with the stories and said that they sounded good, so I guess I did okay for my first batch! With each story being worth one hour, I earned 3 hours.

Around 10:00, I met with Luke to do his interview and take some photos for his page. We met at the soccer field (naturally) and tracked down a jersey to use in the photos, as well as a soccer ball to pose with. Following that hunt, we sat down to do the interview. He was a surprisingly easy interview to do because he was very friendly and he naturally gave a lot of detail in his answers. I recorded it on the voice memo feature on my iPhone for transcribing later on. Then it was time to take photos. I probably took around 20 shots before I said we were good. I stopped there because we were only needing 2 to 3 for the page. We finished up here around 11:00, making that one hour.

I then went back to the Interlachen office to start editing the photos and picking my 3 favorites for the page, as well as typing up the interview. I found one photo that I really loved but it had a sunspot in it, right beside his face, which was disappointing. Luckily our graphic designer, Brianna, is amazing and she was able to airbrush it out and make it usable! I typed up his interview, which proved to be a bit more challenging than expected because of the length of his answers. I had to keep stopping the recording and backing it up to type word-for-word. I finished this at 12:00, which was when I had to head to Broadcast Writing. This was also an hour.

At 5:00 pm today we had our Interlachen meeting. We finally had a rough draft of our book printed and today was essentially a work day. The editors worked on what needed to be fixed, the rest of the staff got to see the book for the first time and jot down any comments that they may have had, and they also got updated on our current status on the book. We are coming close to completion, but we still have quite a bit of polishing to do! This meeting was one hour as well.

Today we shot the news show. I was mostly observing for this one because we had a pretty big turn out this week. We had some issues technically with the sound not coming through right away, but Tori came in and helped us solve that problem. In addition, we took awhile to start because it seemed that Austen had to write most of his own stories. I could be wrong, that was just what it looked like from my perspective. Once we began, everything ran smoothly though. Because of the difficulties we ran from 11:00 (after advising) until 12:00. This was one hour.
